Richard Whitehill, retired orthopedic surgeon from the University of Virginia, designs and produces unique welded steel sculptures for both indoors and outdoors. They have been exhibited at local art shows and are on display in public places and private homes in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Florida, Missouri, Maine, Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, New Jersey, Maryland, Louisiana, New Mexico, Washington and California.
His work ranges from the whimsical to the monumental: sports figures, animals, abstract pieces, kinetic sculptures, pendulums, company logos, and many other subjects. Whether colorfully painted, powder coated, clear-coated natural steel, or stainless steel, each work is well-crafted, durable and highly original.
Dr. Whitehill makes sculptures on commission, working closely with each customer. A project takes about one to three months to complete. Red Barn Studio sculptures have been featured in the Charlottesville Daily Progress, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the C-Ville Weekly, and the Hook, among other publications.
